Keokra dong

Although it is widely reported to be the highest point in Bangladesh at 1230 metres, recent SRTM data, GPS readings and Russian topographic mapping show that its true height is less than 1,000 metres.
On the top of Keokradong there is a small shelter and a signboard put up by the Bangladeshi military proclaiming the altitude to be 3172 feet. Garmin GPS recorded 974 metres (3196 feet) at this location, a different team measured 986m with 3m accuracy by GPS a measurement consistent with Russian topographic mapping and SRTM data. It is at 21°57'00?N 92°30'53?E. USGS and Russian mapping dispute the claim that this is the location correctly named Keokradong; they show Keokradong at an 883m summit further north.

Kaptai Lake

Kaptai Lake is a man-made lake in south-easternBangladesh. It is located in the Kaptai Upazila underRangamati District of Chittagong Division. The Kaptai Lake's average depth is 100 feet (30 m) and maximum depth is 495 feet (151 m).
Construction of the reservoir for the hydro-electric plant began in 1956 by the Government of East Pakistan. As a result, 54,000 acres (220 km2) of farmland in theRangamati District went under water and created the lake.
The hydro-electric project was funded by the United States. The project was finished in 1962. International Engineering Company and Utah International Inc. received the contract for construction of the dam. The dam is 670.6 meters long, and 54.7 meters high. The dam has a 745 feet (227 m) long spillway containing 16 gates. Through the spillway 5,250,000 cu ft/s (149,000 m3/s) of water can pass.
The land that went under water as a result of the dam construction, was 40% of the total arable land in the area. Along with that, 29 square miles (75 km2) of the Government-owned forest, and 234 square miles (610 km2) of other forest land went under water. About 18,000 families with a total of almost 100 thousand people were also displaced. The palace of the king of the Chakmas was also flooded and is now under water

Dhanmondi Lake

Dhanmondi Lake  a prominent depression within Dhaka metropolitan area. It is situated in the middle of dhaka City (about 23°43'N latitude and 90°26'E longitude). It lies within the vicinity of Dhanmondi residential area. Originally Dhanmondi Lake was an abandoned channel of the 'Karwan Bazar Nadi' ('Karwan Bazar' is commonly spelled and pronounced as 'Kawran Bazar'), previously known as the 'Carevan River', whose alignment was possibly along Begunbari Khal-Green Road-Kalabagan-Dhanmondi Lake to the turag river. Part of this lake still functions as a storm water drain and falls into the Begunbari Khal. Expansion of urbanisation in this area during Pakistan period has changed the natural water system in this place. Dhanmondi residential area was developed in 1956 with 240.74 ha of land including the lake.

The lake is about 16% of the total area of Dhanmondi and has been playing a vital role in maintaining the only drainage system of Dhanmondi and adjacent areas. It also shows some trellis pattern together with the dendritic pattern of drainage system. The lake offers attractive panoramic views to many thousands of people who live in the vicinity.
Beginning from Jigatola (Dhanmondi Road # 2) the lake extends up to Road # 27 (new l6A), and bounded by the Mohammadpur-Lalmatia area in the north, Satmasjid Road in the west, BDR (bangladesh rifles) Gate (Dhanmondi Road # 2) in the south and in the east by Kalabagan residential area. It is 3 km in length, 35-100m in width, with a maximum depth of 4.77m and the total area of the water body is 37.37 ha. There is one box culvert in the lake near Sukrabad area, which is the only outlet of the lake. Excess floodwater due to heavy rainfall passes through this outlet. So water level in the lake remains almost the same in all seasons.
The lake is under the management of several authorities looking after its various aspects. The Ministry of Works has its ownership; the Fisheries Department looks after fishery development; the dhaka city corporation, being the principal civic body, exercises some responsibility in its improvement. The Department of Environment (DOE) looks after the aspects of proper environment and protection of aquatic resources of the lake. In and around Dhanmondi Lake some renovation works were carried out from 1998 to 2001 with a view to making the lake a pollution free recreation zone. [Sifatul Quader Chowdhury]

Bagakain Lake

Getting to the Bandarbans was easy, but from there to Baga Lake was a different ordeal. It involved two separate stints of rides of Chander Gari or Moon Cars (yes that’s what the locals call the jeeps that are the only mode of transportation through the hill tracts). First, we went from Banderban city to Ruma Bazar and it took us around three hours. There we had lunch, bought some snacks and most importantly, hired a guide for the trip. Then we hired another Chander Gari which would take us all the way to Baga Lake.

he journey on the road was an amazing experience. The roads through the hill tracts had a lot of ups and downs, and also a lot of small bridges that connected one hill with another. It was like a vast amusement park ride built in nature’s lap. The road from Ruma Bazar to Baga Lake was more intimidating than the first part of the journey. The roads were narrower, and the hills were steeper, but at the same time, the view along the way was more picturesque. There were two or three Army check posts on the way through the whole journey, where we had to register our name for security reasons.

Around three hours later, we reached the hill where Baga Lake starts. Our guide suggested us to get off from the vehicle and hike through the walkway that leads to the top of the hill. What I didn’t realize at the time was that, for a non-athletic person like me, it was a very bad idea to listen to him. The path was much steeper than I originally imagined, and it was an endearing task to climb the hill. I suffered from cramps two-thirds on the way! Although it was an experience that I would always remember, but it would have been a better choice if had stayed on in the Chander Gari that also went all the way to Baga Lake.
Finally, we arrived at Baga Lake. At first look, it seemed like one of those places you see on television and wish if you could ever go to a place like that in real life. While some of my tour-mates went to register our names for the final time in the Army camp situated there, I stayed on at the top to appreciate the beautiful view around me. Then we all checked in to one of the wooden houses situated on the side of Baga Lake, called Laram Rest House. Soon after, we changed and went for a dip into the lake. The water was very clean and we stayed in the water nearly an hour.

As night approached, the temperature started to go down rapidly. During the day, I had literally forgotten that it was winter, as it was as warm as a regular summer day. Fortunately for us, the locals prepared chicken barbeque for dinner. Being 2,700 feet above sea level meant that we were that much closer to the sky. The view of the sky was breathtaking – our eyes could literally sense the difference in the size of the moon and the stars compared to what we are used to seeing in Dhaka. We stayed outdoors in the shivering cold till almost midnight before we went to sleep.
The next morning was bright and sunny when we woke up. The view of the lake looked even amazing than the day before. We went for a walkabout around the lake, but as soon as we were done exploring the area, we set out on our way back. By the evening we were back at the city heart of the Bandarbans.
